The historic 100-seat Recital Hall 125—formerly known as the Elkus Room—in Morrison Hall had remained virtually untouched since its original construction more than 62 years ago.

As performances by UC Berkeley’s Department of Music continued to grow in scale and ambition, the limitations of the existing stage became increasingly apparent, and the entire venue was due for a comprehensive update. Now reintroduced as the Wu Performance Hall, the space has been revitalized with new finishes, upgraded entry doors, modern seating, enhanced acoustics, advanced AV systems, and improved lighting. Most significantly, the main stage was extended and rebuilt to better support a wider range of performances and lectures, ensuring the hall meets the evolving needs of the department and its audiences.
